How to Keep Rhinestones From Falling Off Your Costumes
Nothing deflates a reveal like a trail of crystals across the stage floor. Stoning is a craft, and like any craft it has a right way. These are the habits that keep rhinestones exactly where you put them, from first entrance to final bow.
Prep the surface
Glue bonds to clean fabric, not to body makeup, starch, or factory residue. Wipe or wash the area you are stoning and let it dry fully. On stretch fabrics, consider stoning while the garment is on a form or gently stretched to wearing tension, so the stones do not pop when the fabric moves.
Use the right adhesive
Use a fabric-safe rhinestone or gem glue, not superglue and not a hot glue gun for anything you care about. Different fabrics want different adhesives, so test on a hidden swatch first. The right glue stays flexible after curing, which matters because costumes move and rigid glue does not.
Less glue than you think
Flooding the stone in glue feels secure and performs terribly. A small, controlled dot that spreads just to the stone's edge gives the strongest bond and the cleanest look. Excess glue yellows, stiffens fabric, and dulls the stone from behind. Precision beats volume every time.
Placement and cure time
Place each stone with a wax picker or tweezers, press gently, and then leave it alone. The step everyone skips is curing: most fabric glues need a full 24 hours to reach real strength. Stoning the night before a gig and wearing it the next day is how stones end up on the stage floor. Plan your stoning sessions ahead of deadlines.
Stock your stone kit
Keep a kit with assorted stone sizes, a wax picker, spare glue, and a small brush for cleanup. Our rhinestone stone packs make it easy to keep every size you reach for in stock, so a lost stone before showtime is a two-minute fix instead of a crisis.
The professional shortcut
For jewelry you perform in rather than costumes you stone yourself, start with pieces where the work is already done right. Every stone in our drag jewelry is hand set in prong settings and backed by our lifetime repair warranty. Stone the costume, trust the jewelry.
